The GALUPPI FESTIVAL ASSOCIATION (ONLUS) was created precisely to re-evaluate the figure and compositions of Baldassare Galuppi who was born on Burano in 1706, 50 years before Mozart and only a little later than Antonio Vivaldi with whom he rivalled for fame an honours at that time. Unfortunately, in later centuries Galuppi has been almost forgotten and no other attempt before this, either in Venice or elsewhere, has tried to re-instate this artistic figure if for no other reason than that he was the last representative of a musical school: the glorious and eternal Venetian school.
The Association has developed this idea over 13 years of constant activity, beginning with a brief cycle of concerts on the island of Burano, forming almost at once the more structured and ample editions “I Luoghi di Baldassare” Galuppi and Music Festival – already in its 14th year – which takes place annually in Venice and the island in the months of September and October.
The special characteristic of this Festival is exactly its itinerary nature, intending to take the public to listen to Galuppi’s music in the same places he frequented in his life time: Venice and the islands of the estuary. Over the years, this has naturally allowed people to get to know not only music which had often been forgotten, but also places rarely visited but of incomparable beauty, discovering a forgotten lagoon through the music it inspired, with the aim of giving new impulse to an artistic movement of fundamental historical importance.
Among the places visited by the Festival are the cathedral on Torcello, the basilica of Burano, the Romanic church of St. Catherine on Mazzorbo, the church of St. Mary and St. Donato on Murano, the Massimiliana Tower on St. Erasmus, the island of San Lazzaro degli Armeni, the island of Lazzarretto Nuovo, and others, as well as the church of Santa Maria della Pieta’, known as the Vivaldi church, and the institutional seat of the Association, the grand Ballroom Ca’ Rezzonico, the Museum of the Venetian ‘700s..
Clearly, the musical proposals are not limited to Galuppi who, nevertheless, constitutes the fulcrum, but range through time and space without chronological or formal lmitations. Since 1999 the Festival has been divided into two distinct sections: concerts and operas which has opened up the possibility of staging in world premiere some unpublished works by Galuppi transcribed exactly for these occasions, such as ‘La Partenza e il Ritorno di Marinai’, ‘L’inimico delle donne’, ‘Ifigenia in Taurine’, ‘Il Miserere’ and other important operas.
The Association has also published 4 important CDs. (all live recordings), 3 of which contain an anthology of all the pieces executed in the various editions of the Festival and 1 of an unpublished opera. Quite apart from this, the Association has always encouraged the participation of talented young professional artists, offering them the possibility of performing on the privileged stage of Venice in the ambit of a prestigious festival. Over the years this has included young orchestras coming from the Music Conservatories of the Veneto, and new voices selected through competitions organised by the Association itself. Numerous other initiatives have been undertaken in the course of the various editions, such as the complete performance of the piano sonatas and the trios by Mozart. All this has combined to make the manifestation an open laboratory, an aspect which goes beyond the mere pleasure of listening to music. Prestigious ensembles and soloists have performed at the Festival as well as winners of international prizes, such as Radovan Vatkovic, Giuliano Carmignola, Sonig Tchakerian, Claudio Scimone’s Solisti Veneti, Gianni Guglielmo, Sergej Krilov, Mario Brunello, Domenico Nordio, La Scala String Quartet, and many more. Right from the beginning, the Galuppi Association has benefited from the collaboration of important public and private institutions, such as the Department of Culture of the Venice Municipality, the Veneto Region, the Venice Province, La Fenice Theatre Foundation, the Civic Museums of Venice, the Venice Foundation, APT, and Venice Casino.
